Booting is very snappy – just over a second of the spinning wheel before the login screen comes up. Not so much difference for the Apps, as they’re on a spinny disk still.
I’ll have to investigate the fusion drive concept, but being a great fan of partitions, I don’t think this will be relevant in my case.

Great summary of your experience with SSD.
What level of performance improvement are you getting for different apps and booting?
is there some way to set up the new drive combination as a fusion drive as in the new Mac Mini? This might be the upgrade that I would be interested in for my iMac.
